Notts County 3 - 1 Wrexham

Vanarama National League | 2nd January 2022 | Meadow Lane

I know I'm not alone in saying this was quite possibly one of the best games we've seen at Meadow Lane for a while, not just the football but the added drama of two penalties, an is it/isn't it over the line goal a sending off, an Eli Sam leg breaker and a fantastic atmosphere.

Anyway, I think I'll just get straight into the stats . . .

Key match stats.

Much has been discussed online about who had the better of the game. I think I'll let you make your own mind up but for the sake of impartiality I will say that Wrexham's tempo is a credit to a team that played 80 minutes of the game with ten men and is an indication of the effort they put in.

Unfortunately for Wrexham Notts were able to find another gear when it mattered and despite the visitor's seeing Paul Mullin's penalty well saved by the returning Anthony Patterson they offered very little else in a game that saw Notts record their highest xG of the season so far.

Points needed updated and 1.90 PPG currently sees Notts on target for a top 3 finish, however 23 points from the last 10 games means an average of 2.30PPG, just behind Chesterfield who have averaged 2.40PPG, although that run of 10 games doesn't include the game the Spireites managed to get called off against Notts.

Eli Sam doing his best to fluff a 0.52 chance by heading over the bar and Frank Vincent going for 0.01 overhead kick just about summing up what this match was all about.

Notts' dominance after conceding the early goal was confirmed with the chances created suggesting 2.630 xPTS (expected points) and a win percentage of 83.92%.

National League goal scorers includes cup games, penalties and own goals.

Ian Burchnall's record updated after 44 games.

A few days for those with Covid to recover plus the addition of new loan signing Zak Brunt means Notts should be well prepared to finally get a win at Dover at the third attempt.

Talking of Zak Brunt he was a player identified by my Analysts Bar co-host Colin Sisson back in May last year as a player Notts might want to take a look at. This was our first ever podcast so if you missed it you can view it here . . .
